London, the bustling capital of the UK, may have its iconic landmarks and vibrant streets, but it seems like it’s lacking in the friendliness department. A recent survey conducted by mineral water brand Aqua Pura revealed that London has been dubbed the unfriendliest city in the country. Only 48% of Londoners bother to thank their cabbie, compared to a much higher percentage in Northern Ireland and the North West.

On the other hand, residents up North are enjoying the warmth of Northern hospitality, with 54% of respondents agreeing that the North boasts the friendliest folks. In contrast, only 12% believe that Southerners are as welcoming. The survey highlighted specific London habits that are considered discourteous, such as the lack of small talk and gratitude towards bus drivers.

Interestingly, despite its reputation for being unfriendly, 23% of Londoners claim they are open to having a chat on public transport, especially on the Elizabeth line, which was voted as the most convivial. However, the Northern line didn’t fare as well, with only 4% of respondents praising it for its friendliness.

For those who prefer to keep to themselves while commuting, East England might be the ideal location, as 14% of people in this region admitted that they would never initiate a conversation with a stranger. It’s clear that the perception of friendliness varies across different regions of the UK, with Northerners winning the title of the friendliest bunch.

Terri Cooper of Aqua Pura expressed her thoughts on the survey findings, stating that it’s no surprise that Northerners have been voted as the friendliest, as they are known for enjoying a good chat on the bus and showing gratitude towards bus drivers. The survey sheds light on the cultural differences and social norms that shape interactions in different parts of the UK, highlighting the importance of small gestures like saying ‘thank you’ in creating a friendly atmosphere.
