The UK government has pledged to provide support to a former British soldier who is currently being held captive by the Russian army after he was captured while fighting for Ukraine. The man, identified as James Scott Rhys Anderson, was seen in two videos that surfaced on Russian Telegram channels over the weekend. In the videos, Anderson, a 22-year-old former signalman in the British army, was shown being interrogated by his captors.
The UK Foreign Secretary, David Lammy, stated during a break in G7 talks in Italy that the government is aware of the situation and is committed to offering assistance to the British national. A spokesperson for the Foreign Office also confirmed that they are supporting Anderson’s family following reports of his detention.
Anderson had traveled to Ukraine eight months ago to volunteer with the Ukrainian army’s International Legion. The circumstances surrounding his capture remain unclear, but reports suggest that he was taken near the village of Plekhovo in the Kursk region of Russia. While Russia views foreigners fighting with the Ukrainian army as mercenaries, Anderson’s case is unique as he is the first known western soldier to be captured inside Russia.
Anderson’s father, Scott Anderson, was informed of his son’s capture by his Ukrainian commander and has also seen the video of his interrogation. Friends and acquaintances describe Anderson as a positive and energetic person who is well-liked by those around him.
Former British soldier Shaun Pinner, who was captured while fighting in Ukraine in 2022, emphasized the importance of Anderson’s resilience during this challenging time. Pinner was eventually released after intervention from Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich. He also cautioned against making public statements that could potentially harm Anderson’s case.
The International Legion, where Anderson volunteered, was established early in the conflict in Ukraine and consists mainly of foreign volunteers. The legion is just one part of the larger contingent of foreigners fighting alongside Ukrainian forces. The conflict between Russia and Ukraine has intensified, with both sides engaging in missile attacks and drone warfare.
The situation remains tense, with both sides escalating their military actions. Ukraine recently received approval from the Biden administration to launch long-range missile strikes into Russia, prompting threats of nuclear retaliation from Russian President Vladimir Putin. The conflict has resulted in civilian casualties on both sides, as cities like Kharkiv and Odesa have been targeted in missile attacks.
As the situation continues to unfold, it is crucial for diplomatic efforts to be made to secure the release of James Scott Rhys Anderson and ensure the safety of all those affected by the conflict in the region.
