The small coastal town of Deal, in Kent, made headlines recently when it was temporarily renamed Great Deal for a day. This name change was part of a marketing campaign by Lebara Mobile to draw attention to the amount of money that Brits are missing out on by not taking advantage of good deals.

According to new research conducted by Lebara Mobile, a whopping £11.8 billion is going to waste because many Brits are not savvy with their money and often overlook great deals. This reluctance to trust a good deal stems from the common belief that if something seems too good to be true, it probably is.

The study revealed that 21% of people immediately dismiss amazing deals, which translates to around 13.5 million smartphone users missing out on potential savings. Additionally, over half of the population (54%) are wary of hidden costs or fees, while 37% believe that low prices equate to low quality.

To celebrate the town’s temporary name change to Great Deal, residents were treated to discounted spa treatments and gourmet meals for just £5. Even non-residents had the opportunity to join in on the excitement, with Lebara Mobile offering a chance to win an all-expenses-paid weekend in Deal and a year’s supply of free mobile SIMs.

The research also highlighted that despite there being 89 million mobile contracts in the UK, costing an average of £16.08 per month, a significant number of Brits (27%) have not switched their mobile provider in over a decade. If these individuals had been more proactive in seeking better deals, they could have saved enough money to enjoy luxury experiences such as Michelin star dinners, salon treatments, cinema outings, travel, and more.

The statistics underscore the importance of being financially savvy and seizing opportunities to save money where possible. By being more open to exploring different deals and providers, Brits have the potential to unlock significant savings and treat themselves to a range of enjoyable experiences that they may have previously deemed out of reach. So, next time you come across a tempting deal, don’t be too quick to dismiss it – it could be the key to unlocking a world of exciting possibilities.
