I’m Tired of Pretending I’m Fine
Look, I’m gonna be honest here. I’m tired. Tired of scrolling through perfect lives on Instagram, tired of small talk that goes nowhere, tired of feeling like I’m the only one who’s actually struggling. It’s 2023, and we’re more connected than ever, but I can’t help feeling… alone.
Last Tuesday, I was at this café on 3rd, you know the one with the weirdly good croissants? I was there with my laptop, trying to meet a deadline, when I overheard this woman on the phone. She was laughing, saying, ‘Oh my god, you won’t believe what happened last night!’ And I just… I couldn’t help but think, ‘Who am I kidding? Nobody’s calling me with stories like that.’
And it’s not just me. I’ve talked to alot of people about this. Let’s call him Marcus, an old friend from college. He told me, ‘I have 500 friends on Facebook, but if I needed someone to help me move, I’d be screwed.’ Which… yeah. Fair enough.
But Why Are We So Lonely?
So, what’s the deal? Why does it feel like we’re all just pretending? I mean, I get it, social media is a highlight reel. Nobody posts about their bad days or their lonely nights. But it’s more than that. It’s like we’ve forgotten how to actually connect.
I was talking to a colleague named Dave about this. We were at this conference in Austin, and he said, ‘People are so busy looking at their phones, they don’t even notice when someone’s sitting alone.’ And I thought, ‘Wow, that’s depressing.’ But it’s true, isn’t it?
And don’t even get me started on dating apps. I mean, honestly, is it just me or is it all a bit of a game? Swipe right, match, chat for a bit, never meet up. It’s like we’re collecting people, not connecting with them.
The Government Policy News Update Connection
Interestingly, there’s been some talk about this in the news lately. I was reading a government policy news update the other day, and they were discussing how loneliness is becoming a public health issue. I mean, who would’ve thought, right? But it makes sense. Loneliness can lead to all sorts of health problems, both physicaly and mental.
But here’s the thing, I’m not sure how much they can do about it. I mean, they can’t force people to talk to each other, can they? It’s not like there’s a policy for that. But maybe they can start by acknowledging it’s a problem. That’s a start, right?
Anecdote Time: The Time I Tried to Fix It
So, about three months ago, I decided to do something about it. I joined this meetup group, you know, the kind where you do fun activities with strangers. I went to this painting class, and it was… okay. I mean, I’m not an artist, but it was nice to try something new.
But here’s the thing, I didn’t make any real connections. I saw the same people every week, but we never really talked. It was like we were all just going through the motions. And I thought, ‘This is it? This is what we’ve come to?’
But There’s Hope
Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying it’s all doom and gloom. There are people out there trying to fix this. I mean, have you heard of these ‘alone together’ groups? They’re like book clubs, but for people who just want to sit in a room with others and not feel alone. It’s kinda brilliant, really.
And you know what? It’s working for some people. I have a friend, let’s call her Sarah, who goes to one of these groups. She told me, ‘It’s not about making best friends forever. It’s about feeling like you’re not alone in feeling alone.’ And I thought, ‘Yeah, that makes sense.’
So, What Can We Do?
I’m not sure I have all the answers. But I think it starts with being honest. Admitting that we’re lonely, that we’re struggling. And maybe, just maybe, we can start to fix it.
So, here’s to honesty. Here’s to admitting that we’re not okay. And here’s to hoping that maybe, just maybe, we can find a way to connect again.
Because honestly, I’m tired of pretending I’m fine.
