Miu Shimizu, a talented pianist and music therapist, has been dedicating her time and skills to bringing comfort and solace to terminally ill patients at Meadow House Hospice in Ealing. Originally from Tokyo, Miu moved to the UK to pursue her studies and has been volunteering at the hospice since last year.
Every week, the soothing sounds of Miu’s piano fill the halls of Meadow House as she plays a variety of music genres, from pop to jazz to rock, tailored to suit the mood and preferences of the patients. One of her musical influences is the legendary Elton John, who himself visited Ealing Hospital in the 1990s.
Patients and their families often request music that reflects a certain mood rather than specific songs or artists. Miu not only plays music for the patients but also engages with them in conversations about the emotional impact of music and how it makes them feel.
In an effort to support the hospice, Miu will be hosting a fundraising event on Friday, July 12th at 2:30 pm. Joining her will be her landlady Joanna Burley, a fellow musician and bassoonist, as well as flautist Nanako Nakamura and singer Sophie. Joanna emphasizes the positive influence of music on mood and emotions, especially during challenging times like those faced by the hospice patients.
The musical household of Miu and Joanna believes in the healing power of music and aims to create a supportive and uplifting environment for the patients at Meadow House. Tickets for the fundraiser can be purchased for £10 through https://MHHfundraiser.eventbrite.com.
Miu Shimizu’s dedication to using music as a form of therapy for hospice patients not only provides them with comfort and peace but also fosters a sense of connection and understanding during difficult times. The power of music to uplift spirits and soothe the soul is truly remarkable, and Miu’s efforts to share her musical talents for a noble cause are truly commendable.
