Qualcomm has officially announced that the next Snapdragon Summit will take place from October 21 to October 23 in Hawaii. During this event, the company is expected to introduce its upcoming flagship mobile chipset, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4. This chipset is anticipated to be based on a 3nm process technology from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), promising enhancements in power and efficiency. Chief Marketing Officer Don McGuire had initially hinted at this launch timeline during the Mobile World Congress (MWC 2024) in Barcelona.
The rumored Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chipset is believed to come equipped with Qualcomm’s self-developed Oryon CPU, which was first revealed at the Snapdragon Summit in 2022. It is speculated to offer improved gaming performance and potential support for LPDDR6 RAM, along with an upgraded Neural Processing Unit (NPU). The prime core of this chipset is expected to have a clock speed of 4.2 GHz, surpassing the 3.4 GHz peak clock speed of its predecessor, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.
Comparisons suggest that Qualcomm’s upcoming chipset could outperform Apple’s A17 Pro SoC in terms of processing power. Alleged Geekbench scores for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 indicate that it achieved over 3,000 points in single-core tests, slightly surpassing Apple’s flagship chipset. In the multi-core benchmark test, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 scored an impressive 10,000 points.
However, there are conflicting opinions regarding the GPU performance of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chipset. While some sources predict it to be on par with Apple’s A17 Pro chip, others like X user @negativeonehero suggest that it may have lower peak GPU performance, similar to MediaTek’s Dimensity 9300. Despite this, the chipset is anticipated to offer only a “single-digit” improvement in CPU performance. On a positive note, it is expected to be more power-efficient than its predecessor, reportedly consuming 8W during the multi-core benchmark test.
Xiaomi has reportedly secured exclusive rights for the initial launch of smartphones integrated with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chipset. The Xiaomi 15 Pro is rumored to be the first handset to feature this powerful chipset. Additionally, other flagship smartphones such as the Samsung Galaxy S25 series and OnePlus 13 are expected to debut with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 in 2025.
