Police in South Yorkshire issued a warning to dog owners after a series of dangerous attacks involving XL Bullies in less than 48 hours. The incidents included a man sustaining serious injuries to his face and a mother being terrified when a loose XL Bully lunged at her baby. This comes after a grandmother attempted to protect her grandchild from a dog attack in Sheffield.

In one incident, a man suffered lacerations to his face, neck, and head while trying to separate two dogs in his own home. He was taken to the hospital, and one of the dogs involved was seized and placed in police kennels. Disturbing images were released by South Yorkshire Police showing the man’s injuries caused by an American Bulldog.

Chief Inspector Emma Cheney emphasized the importance of dog owners taking responsibility for their pets to prevent harm and fear in the community. She highlighted the financial costs and strain on resources caused by dealing with dangerous dog incidents. Cheney stressed that any dog has the potential to cause harm, and owners must take necessary precautions to ensure the safety of others.

The warning from the police force came shortly after a 62-year-old man, Farhat Ajaz, appeared in court for owning a dangerously out-of-control dog that attacked an 11-year-old girl and two men. Ajaz pleaded guilty to the charges, including harassment causing fear of violence and being the owner of a dog that caused injury.

Additionally, a change to the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 made it illegal to own an XL Bully without a certificate of exemption starting on February 1st. This decision followed a series of attacks involving the breed, including a fatal mauling near Walsall in the West Midlands.

The incidents serve as a reminder of the importance of responsible pet ownership and the potential consequences of failing to control dangerous dogs. Dog owners are urged to take proactive measures to prevent harm to individuals in the community and avoid the legal repercussions of failing to do so. By prioritizing public safety and following regulations, owners can contribute to creating a safer environment for everyone.
