A new campaign by Hillingdon and Hounslow councils has been launched to coincide with World Suicide Prevention Day. The campaign, known as BeTheirOne, aims to raise awareness about the resources available for people to help those in crisis.
The key message of the campaign is that it only takes one person to save a life. By taking the Zero Suicide Alliance training and getting to know the crisis services in their area, individuals have a better chance of making a difference and potentially saving someone’s life.
The updated training, which was launched today, can be accessed at www.zerosuicidealliance.com/suicide-awareness-training. It only takes 20 minutes to complete and is suitable for anyone aged 16 and above. The training includes scenarios and guidance on how to effectively engage in a life-saving conversation.
Cllr Jane Palmer, Hillingdon Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care, emphasised the importance of taking the free training to learn how to support those in distress. She also highlighted the availability of the Hillingdon Samaritans helpline on 116 123 for anyone in the area who needs someone to talk to or is going through a tough time. The helpline is open 24/7, and dedicated volunteers are ready to provide emotional support.
In addition to the resources mentioned in the campaign, it’s important for individuals to be aware of the signs of someone in crisis and how to offer help. Simple gestures like listening, showing empathy, and encouraging professional help can make a significant difference in someone’s life.
It’s crucial for communities to come together and support each other in times of need. By spreading awareness, being vigilant, and knowing how to respond effectively, we can all play a part in preventing tragic incidents and providing vital support to those who are struggling. Remember, it only takes one person to make a difference and save a life. Let’s be that one person for someone in need.
