Fresh from the success of her Thai restaurant Koyn, renowned restaurateur Samyukta Nair is set to make waves in Mayfair with the opening of her new casual Italian eatery, Nipotina. Following the triumphs of her other establishments like Bombay Bustle, MiMi Mei Fair, and Socca, Nair’s latest venture is poised to bring a taste of traditional Italian cuisine to the heart of London’s affluent district.

The Inspiration Behind Nipotina

The name “Nipotina” translates to “granddaughter” in Italian, reflecting the familial and warm atmosphere that Nair aims to cultivate in the restaurant. Drawing inspiration from her grandfather, the esteemed C.P. Krishnan Nair of the Leela Group hotelier, Nair fondly recalls the meals shared with him and the invaluable lessons she learned from her grandparents. In an interview with the Standard, she shared, “My whole journey has been greatly inspired by my grandparents. Everything I know now, I know through them, so it felt like a warm, comforting name.”

The Culinary Experience at Nipotina

Heading the kitchen at Nipotina is the talented Turin-born chef Somaia Hammad, whose passion for Italian cuisine was ignited during her travels through Puglia with her nonna. Hammad’s menu at Nipotina will showcase classic Italian dishes such as Livornese-style red mullet, bistecca alla Fiorentina, stuffed mussels, and a variety of pizzas. The focus is on providing comforting, family-friendly fare that evokes a sense of nostalgia and togetherness.

Nipotina will open its doors from breakfast, offering a relaxed and informal dining experience during the day. Nair envisions the restaurant as a place where guests can drop in for a quick meal, whether it’s breakfast, lunch, or dinner, without the formality typically associated with Mayfair establishments. The pricing will be accessible, reflecting Nair’s desire to create a welcoming space for all diners, including families and friends looking for a casual dining spot in the neighborhood.

A New Perspective on Mayfair Dining

Nair’s decision to open Nipotina was driven by her desire to fill a gap in the Mayfair dining scene. While there are many excellent Italian restaurants in the area, Nair noticed a lack of casual, all-day dining options that catered to a more laid-back crowd. She explained, “There isn’t really anywhere to go for breakfast in the area, or to go in at about three for a glass of wine with a friend. Where am I going? Apart from a hotel or members’ club, essentially — where can I go for an aperitivo, or just a slice of pizza?”

With Nipotina, Nair hopes to showcase a different side of Mayfair, one that is welcoming, relaxed, and inclusive. The restaurant’s design features ample natural light, allowing diners to take in the bustling surroundings of Mayfair while enjoying a leisurely meal. As the day transitions into evening, Nipotina will transform into a cozy, candlelit space with ambient music, creating a neighborhood atmosphere perfect for unwinding after a long day.

The Wine and Beverage Program

To complement the delectable dishes at Nipotina, Luca Dusi, the passionate owner of Shoreditch’s popular Passione Vino, has curated a diverse wine list featuring small and artisanal producers from Italy. Known for his extensive network in the wine industry, Dusi brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to Nipotina’s beverage program. Nair expressed her admiration for Dusi’s dedication, stating, “He’s very passionate, and both he and Somaia have really embraced the vision for Nipotina. They understand their crafts and have worked collaboratively to create a unique dining experience.”

In keeping with its casual vibe, Nipotina plans to open seven days a week, welcoming guests for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Whether you’re craving a hearty Italian meal, a light snack, or a glass of wine with friends, Nipotina aims to be the go-to spot for a relaxed and enjoyable dining experience in Mayfair.

As Nipotina prepares to make its mark on London’s culinary scene, diners can look forward to an authentic Italian experience infused with warmth, nostalgia, and a touch of modernity. With its focus on family-friendly fare, casual ambiance, and exceptional hospitality, Nipotina promises to be a standout addition to Mayfair’s vibrant dining landscape.
