Since the launch of a campaign in May to recruit more foster carers in Hillingdon, the council has received 105 inquiries, a 250% increase compared to the same period last year.
Foster carers in Hillingdon can now earn up to £1,500 per week and receive a 25 per cent reduction in council tax when looking after a child in care.
In addition to the financial benefits, foster carers also receive £1,000 off utility bills, a winter fuel allowance, and a family Platinum Merlin pass. This comprehensive package equates to an annual salary of up to £72,000.
Currently, there are 347 children in the council’s care, highlighting the need for more dedicated foster carers in Hillingdon.
Rachel Slattery, a foster carer from Hillingdon, shared her positive experience of fostering a newborn baby last year. She mentioned the invaluable support received from her social worker and the benefits of being buddied up with another local foster carer.
Rachel also highlighted the training courses she attended, the new skills she acquired, and the financial assistance that allowed her to provide for the child’s needs. She expressed how fostering has brought her family closer together and described it as the best thing they have ever done.
Cllr Susan O’Brien, Cabinet Member for Education and Families, emphasised the rewarding nature of being a foster carer and acknowledged the financial impact it can have on individuals. The new payment and benefits package aims to make fostering more accessible and appealing to potential carers.
