A McDonald’s worker named Joshua Daryl McGregor has been sentenced to five years in prison for starting a fire at the restaurant in Savannah, Georgia. The incident occurred in April 2023 when McGregor became frustrated with the high number of customers during a busy Sunday shift. In an act of frustration, McGregor lit a piece of cardboard and threw it into the dumpster outside, which was filled with flammable material. The fire quickly spread, forcing customers waiting in the drive-thru to abandon their orders and leave. The entire restaurant had to be temporarily shut down until the flames were extinguished.

McGregor filmed the fire on his phone and later pleaded guilty to arson charges. He was caught on CCTV footage igniting the fire before being apprehended by authorities. US Attorney Jill E. Steinberg condemned McGregor’s actions, stating that intentionally setting a fire to damage someone else’s property is inexcusable. Beau Kolodka from the Atlanta Field Division also emphasized the seriousness of arson, highlighting that it not only destroys property but also endangers the lives of firefighters, first responders, and the public.

The ATF, in collaboration with the Savannah Fire’s Arson Unit and other law enforcement agencies, is dedicated to ensuring the safety of communities and holding perpetrators of arson accountable. Fred Anderson, chief investigator for the Savannah Fire Arson Unit, expressed gratitude for the partnership with local and federal agencies in prosecuting arson cases that impact interstate commerce and contribute to making the community safer.

Arson is a violent crime with severe consequences, and the authorities are committed to upholding the law and protecting the public. The collaboration between different agencies and units is essential in combating arson and maintaining safety in the city. The incident serves as a reminder of the dangers of reckless actions and the importance of swift and effective response to such crimes.
