South London residents have always had a soft spot for their local Wetherspoons pubs, but recent years have seen some changes in the landscape. In 2022, the popular chain announced that five of its pubs in the area were up for sale.

Among these were the Wrong Un in Bexleyheath, the Bankers Draft in Eltham, the Asparagus in Battersea, the Capitol in Forest Hill, and the Foxley Hatch in Purley. Unfortunately, three out of the five pubs ended up permanently closing their doors not long after the announcement of the sales.

The Bankers Draft was the first to close on August 20, followed by the Capitol on October 15, and the Foxley Hatch on December 3. By the beginning of 2024, only the Asparagus and the Wrong Un remained open from the original five. However, the Asparagus was the next to shut its doors on March 17, leaving the Wrong Un as the last standing pub out of the initial five that were put up for sale.

Interestingly, there was an offer made for the Bexleyheath pub, but on June 6 it was decided that it would be taken off the market and continue to operate as a Wetherspoons. On the other hand, the London & Rye in Rushey Green, Catford, which was not part of the original five for sale, also closed its doors on August 25 after 24 years in business.

Although the London & Rye was not initially up for sale in 2022, it was eventually sold earlier this year with offers starting from £850,000. This closure marked the end of an era for the beloved pub, which had opened its doors in May 2000.

The changing landscape of Wetherspoons pubs in South London highlights the evolving nature of the hospitality industry. As residents bid farewell to some familiar establishments, they also look forward to new opportunities and experiences that may arise in the future. Despite the closures, the community spirit and love for local pubs remain strong, ensuring that South London continues to be a vibrant hub for social gatherings and good times.
