Jenny Ashe, a long-serving employee at Ealing Hospital, is celebrating an incredible 45 years of service. She started as a part-time receptionist in 1979, just before the hospital admitted its first patient. Back then, everything was done with pen and paper, as there were no computers. Despite getting a full-time job at an electronics firm, Jenny continued to work weekends at Ealing Hospital because she enjoyed it so much.

Over the years, Jenny moved from reception to the A&E department, where she currently works as a medical secretary. She recalls a time when there were no front-of-house triage nurses, and she would take patients’ details and direct them to either the blue line for minor ailments or the red line for more serious issues. Jenny’s dedication to her job was evident in moments where she went above and beyond, like rushing to help a baby in need of resuscitation or checking on a young man who was unwell in his car.

Although Jenny briefly considered retraining as a nurse, she decided against it due to having three young children at the time. However, she was proud of a colleague who did make the leap to join the nursing profession. Jenny describes Ealing Hospital as a friendly place to work, filled with happy memories and the knowledge that she is making a difference in the lives of others. Despite now working part-time, retirement is not on her mind.

In celebration of Ealing Hospital’s 45th birthday, an exhibition will be held in the hospital’s Galleria space this autumn. The exhibition will showcase the rich history of the hospital, highlighting its growth and evolution over the years. Visitors will have the opportunity to learn about the dedicated staff members, like Jenny Ashe, who have been instrumental in providing care and support to patients.

As we honour Jenny’s remarkable 45 years of service, we also recognise the countless healthcare professionals who have contributed to the success and reputation of Ealing Hospital. Their commitment to excellence and compassion has made a lasting impact on the community, ensuring that individuals receive the care and treatment they need. Cheers to Jenny Ashe and all the unsung heroes of Ealing Hospital who continue to make a difference every day.
