Today, August 12, London is expected to experience what could potentially be the hottest day of the year so far in 2024, with temperatures reaching highs of 34 degrees.

This surpasses the previous hottest temperature recorded this year in London in July, which peaked at 32 degrees.

These warmer conditions are a result of tropical Storm Debby, which has strengthened the jet stream, bringing hot air to the UK over the weekend and into Monday.

Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist, Dan Holley, explained: “We anticipate a brief spell of hotter and more humid weather for Sunday and Monday, followed by a decrease in temperatures on Tuesday as unsettled conditions return.

“This change in temperature is influenced by Tropical Storm Debby in North America. Debby is contributing to the strengthening of the jet stream, causing it to meander over the Atlantic. This will allow hot air from France to move into the UK later this weekend and early next week.”

Temperatures will start to rise in the morning, beginning at an overnight high of 20 degrees and climbing into the 30s by midday.

Monday is forecasted to remain sunny throughout the day and into Tuesday, before temperatures start to drop again towards the middle of the week.

There is a possibility of isolated thunderstorms in some areas, with thunderstorms expected by late afternoon, leading to generally warm and humid conditions overnight.
