Keir Starmer has vowed to ensure that those involved in the riots in Southport will face the consequences of the law. The violence erupted after far-right protesters attacked a mosque and pelted police officers with glass bottles and bricks following a tragic knife attack that claimed the lives of three children.

During the chaos, Merseyside police reported that 22 officers were injured, with eight sustaining serious injuries such as fractures, lacerations, a suspected broken nose, and concussion. In addition, three police dogs were also injured, with two sustaining leg injuries from bricks and a third suffering burns.

In response to the violence, police introduced a 24-hour section 60 order granting enhanced stop and search powers and a section 34 dispersal order allowing them to seize items used for anti-social behavior. Assistant Chief Constable Alex Goss condemned the destruction caused by the offenders, urging anyone with information to come forward.

The protest, which was scheduled to begin at 8 pm, quickly escalated with protesters barricading themselves, attacking a mosque, and arming themselves with stones and bricks. As the situation intensified, police from neighboring forces were called in to assist in controlling the violence.

The riots came in the aftermath of a tragic stabbing incident that claimed the lives of three children and left several others critically injured. False accusations and misinformation spread on social media, prompting condemnation from Home Secretary Yvette Cooper.

Despite the violent turn of events, hundreds of people had gathered for a peaceful vigil outside the Atkinson arts venue to pay their respects to the victims. However, the vigil was marred by far-right protesters who incited violence outside a local mosque.

Riot police were forced to intervene as demonstrators shouted Islamophobic slogans and engaged in violent behavior. Some individuals attacked police vehicles, hurled missiles, and attempted to overturn a riot van. The situation was so severe that additional police reinforcements were called in from neighboring areas.

Southport MP Patrick Hurley condemned the attacks on emergency services and expressed gratitude for the community’s support in the wake of the tragic incident. The solidarity and sympathy shown at the vigil highlighted the community’s resilience in the face of adversity.

As the investigation continues and efforts are made to hold those responsible accountable, it is essential for the community to come together and support one another during this challenging time. The commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring justice for the victims remains a top priority for authorities.
