With the arrival of warm weather, it is essential for dog owners to pay close attention to the safety and well-being of their furry companions. Dogs Trust Harefield is urging pet owners to be cautious and vigilant, as leaving a dog unattended in a car, even for a few minutes, can be extremely dangerous and potentially fatal due to the rapid increase in temperature inside the vehicle.

The Dogs Trust, the UK’s largest dog welfare charity, is raising awareness about the risks of hot weather for dogs. They have released a video titled “Dogs Die in Hot Cars” to emphasize the importance of this issue. If you come across a dog in distress inside a car, it is advised to call emergency services immediately by dialing 999.

It is crucial for dog owners to understand that dogs are unable to regulate their body temperature in the same way humans do. This makes them more vulnerable to heat-related illnesses, especially when exposed to warm weather for extended periods of time. Certain breeds, such as English Bulldogs, Pugs, and French Bulldogs, as well as older dogs, overweight dogs, and those with pre-existing medical conditions, are at a higher risk of suffering from heatstroke.

Symptoms of heatstroke in dogs include heavy panting, excessive drooling, lethargy, drowsiness, vomiting, diarrhea, and even collapsing. These signs should not be ignored, and immediate action should be taken to cool down the dog and seek veterinary assistance if necessary.

Paula Boyden, Veterinary Director of Dogs Trust, emphasizes the importance of taking preventive measures to protect dogs from the dangers of hot weather. This includes scheduling walks during the coolest parts of the day, providing a cool and shaded resting area for dogs, and ensuring they always have access to fresh water to stay hydrated.

Remember, the well-being of our furry friends is in our hands, and by being responsible and attentive pet owners, we can ensure that they stay safe and happy, even when the temperatures rise. Stay informed, stay vigilant, and keep your pets cool and comfortable during the summer months.
