Sutton Council is asking for feedback from residents on a new plan to improve walking and cycling routes linking the London Cancer Hub (LCH) with the nearest Belmont station. This initiative is part of a £14.1m investment to enhance transportation in Belmont. The station is only about a 10-minute walk from the LCH but currently lacks clear paths for pedestrians and cyclists.

The proposed improvements include extending and resurfacing paths from Belmont station to the LCH, as well as enhancing lighting, signage, seating, and greenery along the route. These plans were announced by the council last December following the approval of local government funding. The council has been working on improving Belmont station by increasing train services to London Victoria and introducing step-free access earlier this year.

Sutton Council’s goal is to establish the LCH as a leading centre for cancer research and treatment, which is expected to create 13,000 new job opportunities in various sectors. An initial consultation with residents in November revealed the need for better cycling infrastructure, particularly along Pelton Avenue and Brighton Road. Concerns were also raised about parking, flooding, and potential traffic congestion at pedestrian crossings. The council has taken these comments into consideration and is now seeking final feedback on the plans before the September 1 deadline.

Residents, workers, and commuters in Belmont are encouraged to share their thoughts on the proposed improvements, which include adding seating, flowers, pathways, and more. Barry Lewis, the new Leader of Sutton Council, emphasised the importance of creating a safe and convenient route between Belmont Station and the LCH to support the local economy and job opportunities.
