New research has shown that many people in the UK are unaware of who is eligible for winter vaccinations on the NHS, particularly those with underlying health conditions such as respiratory disease, diabetes, and morbid obesity. A staggering 32% of individuals with these conditions do not realise they are eligible for the vaccines.

To address this lack of information, the Stay on Track campaign has been launched by Moderna in partnership with Obesity UK. This initiative is specifically aimed at individuals living with obesity, who are at a higher risk of severe outcomes from respiratory viruses like COVID-19 and the flu.

The campaign not only highlights the importance of getting vaccinated but also provides five top tips to help prevent winter illnesses. These tips include staying healthy and active, maintaining good sleep hygiene, keeping warm, practicing hand hygiene, and checking eligibility for winter vaccinations.

Dr Jahangir Alom BEM, an Emergency Medicine Physician, emphasises the increased risk that individuals with a BMI of 40 and above face when it comes to COVID-19 and flu. These individuals are eligible to receive both vaccines on the NHS, yet many are unaware of this fact.

The research conducted by Moderna UK revealed that 55% of people living with obesity are concerned about contracting COVID-19 or the flu in the upcoming months. However, 40% of them are unsure or unaware of the vaccinations they are eligible for. This lack of awareness is a cause for concern, especially as cases of respiratory illnesses tend to rise during the winter months.

Professor Paul Gately, CEO of Obesity UK, stresses the importance of raising awareness among both the general public and those affected by obesity regarding the available vaccines and eligibility criteria. Despite being a significant portion of the population, individuals with a BMI over 40 are often overlooked in vaccination campaigns.

The Stay on Track campaign website, StayOnTrackThisAutumn.co.uk, offers valuable information on preventative measures and allows individuals to check their BMI and eligibility for the COVID-19 and flu vaccines this winter. Dr Philip Cruz, Country Medical Director at Moderna UK, underscores the importance of prioritising respiratory vaccines alongside other health measures like proper nutrition, exercise, and rest as the winter approaches.

In conclusion, it is crucial for individuals, especially those with underlying health conditions like obesity, to be informed about their eligibility for winter vaccinations on the NHS. By raising awareness and taking proactive measures, we can help protect vulnerable populations and reduce the spread of respiratory illnesses during the colder months.
