Huawei has announced that they have developed a tri-fold smartphone that can be folded into a Z-shape and will be mass-produced by the end of 2024. This innovative device has been in the works for five years, according to Chinese state-sponsored media outlet Securities Daily.
During a recent live event, Huawei CEO Yu Chengdong expressed his excitement for the device, stating, “The next generation of folding screens, others can imagine it, but they can’t make it. We’ve been thinking about it for five years, and it’s finally coming out.”
The device is equipped with a double hinge system that allows it to fold in both directions, forming a Z-shape. This unique design, with two folds, is being referred to as a tri-fold due to its three screens. When unfolded, the device boasts a ten-inch display, larger than Apple’s 9th-gen iPad.
Each of the three screens on Huawei’s tri-fold smartphone has different thicknesses and utilizes lightweight glass to reduce weight and bulk. Additionally, one of the screens features a rear-facing camera, while the others may include bumps and recesses for a locking mechanism.
Rumors suggest that Chinese display maker BOE is the source of the screens for this foldable phone. The device is rumored to run HarmonyOS on a Kirin 9100 processor and is expected to cost around ¥15,000 ($2,065).
Despite these exciting developments, Huawei has not provided specific details on the progress of the tri-fold smartphone. This new device comes after Huawei’s first generation foldable smartphone, the Huawei Mate X, was launched in 2019.
In the rapidly evolving smartphone market, other companies are also exploring foldable technology. Samsung recently acquired a UK AI startup to enhance its products, while China’s Honor introduced a laptop with a removable camera. Smartphone sales are on the rise, with Xiaomi gaining ground on Apple.
Looking ahead, Apple is rumored to be working on a foldable iPhone, set to be released in 2026. Market analysts have reported a 49 percent increase in global foldable smartphone shipments in Q1 2024, although folding phones still make up less than two percent of the market.
With the upcoming release of Huawei’s tri-fold smartphone and the potential for foldable iPhones, the future of mobile technology is indeed folding out in exciting ways. Stay tuned for more updates on these innovative devices as they continue to reshape the smartphone landscape.
