Drinkers in Hillingdon are in for a treat as a local pub group launches a campaign to lower prices by reducing VAT. The Wetherspoons pubs, The Botwell Inn and JJ Moons, will be offering a 7.5% discount on all food and drinks on September 12. This initiative, known as Tax Equality Day, aims to shed light on the tax discrepancy between pubs and supermarkets.
The current VAT rate for all food and drinks in pubs stands at 20%, while supermarkets enjoy a 0% VAT rate on food items. This allows supermarkets to sell alcohol at a lower price compared to pubs. By reducing prices for one day, the pub group hopes to raise awareness about the financial challenges faced by pubs due to this tax disparity.
Sean O’Farrell, the manager of Botwell Inn, expressed his concerns about the unfair advantage that supermarkets have over pubs. He highlighted the significant pressure that pubs have been under for many years because of this tax inequality. O’Farrell called on the Chancellor to level the playing field by creating tax equality between pubs and supermarkets.
The campaign not only benefits drinkers in Hillingdon by offering discounted prices for a day but also serves as a call to action for policymakers to address the tax disadvantages faced by the hospitality industry. By supporting local pubs, consumers can contribute to the sustainability of these establishments and help create a fairer business environment.
In addition to the discount day, the pub group is actively advocating for long-term changes in VAT regulations to ensure a more equitable system for pubs across the country. By raising awareness about the issue and engaging with customers, the Hillingdon pub group is taking a proactive stance in promoting tax equality and supporting the local hospitality sector.
As consumers, we can show our support for local pubs by participating in initiatives like Tax Equality Day and choosing to frequent these establishments over supermarkets. By working together to address tax discrepancies and promote a level playing field, we can help sustain the vibrant pub culture in Hillingdon and beyond. Cheers to fair prices and a thriving hospitality industry!
