Hillingdon Council, led by the Conservative party, is reaching out to the new Labour government for financial support to alleviate the funding challenges faced by local authorities.
The council acknowledges the need for increased efficiency and innovation to sustain services but emphasizes that long-term sustainability is not possible without reforms at the national level.
Cllr Ian Edwards, council leader, presented seven urgent priorities for Hillingdon at a recent council meeting. He highlighted the impact of inadequate funding on essential services, particularly in caring for vulnerable children and adults.
The council leader emphasized the importance of additional grant funding to address the shortfall and meet the growing demand for services. He also pointed out the disproportionate burden placed on the council and residents to support asylum seekers and the lack of funding to keep up with inflation.
In response to the motion, Peter Curling, leader of the Labour group on Hillingdon Council, criticized the Conservatives for seeking support from the Labour government after failing to address these issues themselves while in power. He called for concrete actions rather than just lobbying efforts.
Aside from financial support, Hillingdon also stressed the importance of local authorities having more power over transport initiatives and planning policies. Cllr Edwards highlighted the need for councils to resist regional transport projects that do not benefit local residents and expressed concerns about the speed at which these initiatives are implemented.
Furthermore, the council leader advocated for responsible house-building without encroaching on the Green Belt. He emphasized the importance of preserving the character of local neighborhoods and protecting green spaces from excessive development.
