A health warning has been issued in London as a heatwave is expected to hit the city. The UKHSA has issued a yellow weather warning starting from 9am on Monday, July 29 through to Wednesday, July 31 at 11pm. This warning will affect the south west of the UK.
The Met Office forecasts hot and dry weather from Monday to Wednesday. On Monday, it will be mostly sunny with a few clouds from 10am to 4pm. Temperatures are expected to reach a high of 28 degrees and a low of 18 degrees.
Tuesday will be similar, with a few clouds between 1pm and 7pm. Temperatures will peak at 29 degrees and drop to 19 degrees.
Wednesday’s weather is predicted to be almost the same, with highs of 27 degrees and lows of 19 degrees in the afternoon. Clouds are expected throughout the day.
Due to the high temperatures, the UKHSA warns of potential impacts on the health care and social sector. This includes an increase in healthcare service usage among the vulnerable population, a higher risk of death for vulnerable individuals, and the possibility of indoor spaces becoming very warm.
The UKHSA advises the public to stay safe in the heat by avoiding the sun between 11am and 3pm, scheduling physical activities for cooler times of the day, keeping homes cool by closing windows and curtains, covering up when going outside, staying hydrated, checking on vulnerable individuals, and being aware of heat-related illnesses.
People at higher risk of becoming seriously unwell in hot weather include older individuals aged 65 and over, babies and young children, those with underlying health conditions, individuals on certain medications, those with mental health problems, people who are ill and dehydrated, those with alcohol or drug dependencies, physically active individuals, outdoor workers, homeless individuals, and those who live alone and may struggle to care for themselves.
