Dentists are recommending that children should be given stickers instead of sweets this Halloween to prevent tooth decay. The Royal College of Surgeons of England has provided tips to help kids steer clear of cavities as they go trick or treating. They suggest avoiding lollipops and sticky candies.

Dr. Charlotte Eckhardt, the dean of the Faculty of Dental Surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons of England, emphasized that while Halloween is a time for celebration, excessive sugar consumption can be harmful to oral health. It’s important to avoid constant snacking on sugary treats, as this can increase the risk of tooth decay.

In addition to the advice for children, the public is encouraged to hand out alternatives like stickers or playdough instead of sweets. It’s also recommended to limit the amount of candy given to each child and encourage them to choose water over sugary drinks at Halloween parties. Providing children with a new toothbrush in their favorite color or featuring a cartoon character may motivate them to brush their teeth more regularly.

Furthermore, parents should ensure that their children brush their teeth with fluoride toothpaste before bedtime, even when they are tired. This simple habit can help prevent tooth decay and reduce the risk of hospital admissions due to dental issues.

According to NHS England data, tooth decay is the primary reason for hospital admissions among children. In the 2023/24 period, nearly 20,000 children aged five to nine in England were hospitalized because of tooth decay. This highlights the importance of promoting good oral hygiene practices, especially during occasions like Halloween when candy consumption is high. By following these recommendations, both children and adults can enjoy a healthier and cavity-free Halloween celebration.
