With Bonfire Night just around the corner, Dogs Trust Harefield is urging dog owners to start preparing now for the upcoming firework season. Dr. Jenna Kiddie, Head of Canine Behaviour at Dogs Trust, emphasises that firework season can be a stressful time for dogs due to the loud noises and flashes that can cause fear and anxiety.
It is important to start preparations early and not wait until the fireworks begin. Begin preparing your dog as early as October to help minimise the impact of fireworks on them. One useful tip is to teach your puppies to be relaxed with noises by using a firework soundtrack called Sounds Scary.
Adjust your daily schedule to ensure your dog is indoors when fireworks are likely to go off. This may require changing your walking routine to take them out earlier in the day. Additionally, make sure your dog has a safe space to retreat to if they feel anxious during fireworks.
Plan your activities around key firework dates such as Bonfire Night and Diwali to ensure that you or someone familiar to your dog will be at home with them during these stressful times. It is also recommended to speak to your vet well in advance of fireworks events as they can provide advice and may prescribe medication to help your dog cope.
