A man with three children has been sentenced to three years in prison for his involvement in the riots in the UK. Liverpool Crown Court heard that Luke Moran, 38, had lost his job after being identified in a photo from the violent incident in Southport following a knife attack that resulted in the deaths of three girls.
During the chaos, Moran was caught on camera wielding a large piece of concrete and smashing the window of a police vehicle with an officer inside. The judge described his actions as one of the worst cases he had seen so far, highlighting the serious nature of the disorder that swept through Merseyside and other parts of the country.
The court was shown footage of Moran hitting the vehicle’s window multiple times with the masonry, causing the officer inside to fear for his life. The situation was so intense that the officer had to radio for help as he felt his window was about to shatter.
Moran was accompanied by three other defendants in court, who exchanged fist bumps and words of encouragement before the sentencing. One of his friends, Nicholas Sinclair, was also sentenced to two years and four months for his involvement in the riots, where he was seen shouting at police and throwing bricks.
The defence argued that Moran and Sinclair were caught up in the violence without fully understanding the consequences of their actions. However, the judge emphasised that everyone involved should take responsibility for their deliberate participation in the disorder, rather than attributing it to thoughtlessness or ignorance.
In addition to Moran and Sinclair, two other defendants, Daniel Carrigan and Thomas Whitehead, were also sentenced for their roles in the violent events. Carrigan received two years and eight months for violent disorder and criminal damage, while Whitehead was sentenced to one year and eight months for violent disorder.
