Russian Claims of External Forces Escalating Violence in Syria
Moscow has recently condemned what it refers to as “external forces” fueling increased violence in Syria. The Russian foreign ministry spokesperson, Maria Zakharova, pointed fingers at outside actors for instigating a sweeping insurgent offensive in the region. This comes amidst reports from Ukrainian military intelligence suggesting that Russia is preparing to send mercenaries to bolster troops aligned with the government in Damascus.
Developments in the Conflict
The recent surge in violence saw Islamist militants, specifically Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), leading a successful takeover of the city of Aleppo. Russian support for a counter-attack by Damascus remains unwavering, despite indications that Russia is reducing its naval presence in Tartus. In response, Syrian army forces have dispatched reinforcements to Hama city to reinforce their positions against HTS militia forces.
Furthermore, fighting in eastern Syria has intensified, with pro-Damascus forces clashing with rebel militias in Deir Ezzour. The Pentagon has also been active in the region, undertaking pre-emptive strikes against threats to US and allied forces near the Euphrates river.
Challenges Faced by Assad’s Regime
The sudden insurgent offensive in north-west Syria poses a significant challenge to President Bashar al-Assad’s rule. The takeover of Aleppo, described as “an audacious act” by Zakharova, marks a critical moment in the decade-long Syrian civil war. With support from Moscow, Tehran, and Iranian-backed militias, Assad is struggling to maintain control over the fractured country.
International Diplomatic Efforts
Amidst escalating violence, diplomatic efforts are underway to address the crisis in Syria. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov is set to meet with counterparts from Iran and Turkey for urgent consultations. Ankara has been actively involved in supporting rebel groups in north-western Syria and is advocating for political negotiations to end the conflict.
As the situation in Syria continues to deteriorate, the international community faces mounting pressure to intervene and restore peace to the war-torn region. The plight of civilians caught in the crossfire remains a pressing concern, with reports of hospitals being targeted and civilian casualties on the rise.
