The Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust is inviting people to participate in the 12 Days Wild festive nature challenge. This challenge will take place from Christmas Day until January 5, encouraging individuals to engage in one wild activity each day.

By signing up for this challenge, participants will receive daily emails filled with inspiration, ideas, and activities aimed at promoting wellbeing. These activities include enjoying winter walks in nature and witnessing the beauty of star gazing.

Iolo Williams, a BBC TV presenter and vice-president of the Wildlife Trust, highlights the bustling activity of winter wildlife from dawn till dusk. He mentions the early rising otters, the night-hunting barn owls, and the mesmerising murmurations of starlings at dusk. Williams encourages everyone to embrace these wildlife adventures during the 12 Days Wild challenge.

Lea Ellis, engagement manager at Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust, emphasises the importance of spending time outdoors during this season. Even on grey days, the natural light and fresh air can significantly lift spirits. Ellis suggests embracing all types of weather and being mindful of how it affects individuals, whether it’s the warmth of the sun, the coolness of raindrops, or the rosy glow from the cold.

Research has shown that spending time in nature has a positive impact on mental and physical health. A survey conducted by Wildlife Trusts revealed that participants in the 30 Days Wild summer challenge felt 56% more connected to nature and experienced a 30% improvement in their overall health.
