Scotland’s former first minister, Humza Yousaf, recently spoke at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and referred to Elon Musk as “one of the most dangerous men on the planet.” Yousaf criticized Musk for using his immense wealth for what he described as “wicked evil.”
Yousaf’s comments came after Musk deleted a repost on social media that promoted a false claim about detainment camps in the Falkland Islands. Musk, known as the owner of X, formerly Twitter, has been vocal about the recent disorder in the UK, even suggesting that “civil war is inevitable” in the country.
During his speech, Yousaf also compared Musk to Reform UK leader Nigel Farage, calling them “bosom buddies.” He emphasized that Musk’s vast wealth and lack of accountability make him a dangerous individual who promotes harmful information without consequences.
Yousaf highlighted the need for social media companies to regulate misinformation and disinformation on their platforms. He pointed out a specific incident where false rumors spread on social media, leading to a misrepresentation of a stabbing incident in Stirling. Yousaf stressed the importance of holding social media companies responsible for the content shared on their platforms.
In a separate statement, First Minister John Swinney echoed Yousaf’s concerns about social media companies’ role in spreading dangerous information. Swinney called for improved conduct from these companies and emphasized the need to remove content that incites hatred or violence.
Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar also joined the conversation, stating that social media companies have a duty to prevent the spread of hatred and misinformation. The leaders’ discussions on social media regulation come at a time when online platforms are under scrutiny for their handling of harmful content.
