Efficient Energy Savings Initiatives in Hillingdon Municipality

A significant project to enhance the energy efficiency of various Hillingdon Council buildings is currently underway following the municipality’s successful bid for the largest government grant in London aimed at de-carbonisation efforts.

Today, at the Civic Centre in Uxbridge, a crane was utilized to lift 10 one-ton air source heat pumps onto the roof. The installation process was closely supervised by the council’s project team in collaboration with Amaresco, the contracted construction company.

With a substantial grant of £13.75m from a program administered by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero and executed by Salix, Hillingdon is anticipating annual energy savings of £190,000, along with 1,000 tons of carbon dioxide reductions and the generation of 17 kilowatts of power.

Furthermore, energy efficiency enhancements are also being implemented at the Hillingdon Sports and Leisure Complex in Uxbridge and the Highgrove Pool and Fitness Centre in Ruislip. Earlier this year, modifications were completed at the Winston Churchill Theatre in Ruislip, resulting in the building currently operating at net carbon zero.

Cllr Jonathan Bianco, the Cabinet Member for Property, Highways, and Transport, emphasized the significance of this project, highlighting that although it involves substantial initial expenditure, it will lead to significant long-term savings, both financially and environmentally, for the council and its residents.

In addition to the government grant, the council has allocated £5m towards the project, showcasing its commitment to sustainable and energy-efficient practices within the municipality.

Moreover, a separate initiative aimed at reducing carbon emissions at the Botwell Green Leisure Centre in Hayes is receiving partial funding from Sport England, demonstrating collaborative efforts across various sectors to promote environmental sustainability and energy efficiency.

These energy-saving measures not only benefit the council financially but also contribute to the overall well-being of the community by reducing carbon footprint and promoting a more sustainable future for Hillingdon residents. The commitment to investing in such initiatives showcases the council’s dedication to environmental stewardship and responsible resource management.
