Thousands of Free Books Donated to NSPCC This Christmas

In a heartwarming gesture just in time for Christmas, NSPCC hubs all over the UK have been blessed with an influx of more than 37,000 free books, thanks to a new partnership with BookTrust, the UK’s leading children’s reading charity.

The collaboration has seen BookTrust generously distribute a total of 37,400 books to 23 different settings affiliated with the NSPCC and its network of partners. Titles range from the enchanting “Mirror Baby: Hello You!” to the engaging “Can You Say It Too? Woof! Woof!” and even include Welsh English bilingual editions of “Finger Wiggle Book: Look at Me.”

A Personal Touch: From a Child’s Perspective

One touching account shared by the NSPCC sheds light on the profound impact of books on children’s lives. A young girl who reached out to the charity’s Childline service expressed her struggles with self-consciousness and anxiety about being different. She found solace in reading and drawing, using them as a means of escape from her worries.

Helen Westerman, Head of Local Campaigns for the NSPCC, emphasised the importance of reading in fostering creativity, building strong bonds between children and parents, and supporting mental well-being. Initiatives like “Look, Say, Sing, Play” and services such as “Pregnancy in Mind” highlight the significance of nurturing these relationships for children’s holistic development.

Empowering Young Minds Through Reading Together

Julie Hayward, Director of Partnerships at BookTrust, underscored the transformative power of storytelling and the love of books in shaping children’s lives. By collaborating with the NSPCC and other partners to provide families with these literary treasures, BookTrust hopes to spread the joy of reading and storytelling this festive season.

The books donated will not only benefit families accessing NSPCC services but will also be made available to local partners for distribution to parents and children in the upcoming weeks. This initiative aims to make a tangible difference in the lives of those it touches, fostering a love for reading and creating lasting memories this Christmas.

Supporting NSPCC through Number Day and Youth Engagement

In addition to the heartwarming book donation, the NSPCC is rallying schools across the UK to participate in Number Day, a mathemagical fundraiser slated for 2025. By engaging children in fun maths-related activities, Number Day aims to raise funds for NSPCC services while promoting learning and creativity in classrooms nationwide.

Moreover, young people are encouraged to apply for the NSPCC’s Young People’s Board for Change, where they can lend their voices and ideas to shape the charity’s initiatives in 2025. This unique opportunity not only empowers young individuals to make a difference but also equips them with invaluable skills and experiences for the future.

As the spirit of giving and generosity permeates this holiday season, the collaboration between the NSPCC and BookTrust stands as a beacon of hope and inspiration, illuminating the transformative power of reading and community support in enriching children’s lives.
