Leicester Square’s Hippodrome building is a hub of entertainment with a rich history dating back to 1900 when it was an indoor circus hosting elephants, seals, and lions. Nowadays, the Hippodrome Casino boasts three casinos, a poker floor, a Baccarat lounge, and the award-winning Chop Chop Hippodrome restaurant hidden in the basement.
As I waited outside the casino for my companion, Leicester Square buzzed with activity as people of all kinds entered the establishment. The casino attracts a mix of wealthy individuals and those aspiring to be wealthy, some dressed smartly while others opted for a more casual look.
Upon entering the Hippodrome Casino, visitors are greeted by walls lined with historical memorabilia, including Harry Houdini’s famous straitjacket. The Chop Chop Hippodrome restaurant, operated by the Four Seasons Group, offers Cantonese Chinese cuisine in a unique setting with mood lighting and aquatic-themed decor.
I started my dining experience with a Chop Chop Cocktail, a tangy and effervescent drink with bursts of boba pearls, while my companion chose a Tsingtao lager. The extensive menu made it challenging to decide, but we settled on spring rolls and crispy duck, both of which exceeded our expectations.
The crispy duck was a standout dish, featuring fresh vegetables, succulent duck, and a thin pancake that held the flavours together perfectly. The salt and pepper squid was equally delightful, complemented by a salad with a kick of garlic, chilli, and ginger – although I learned my lesson about the hot chilli sauce.
For mains, we indulged in the signature Cantonese-style roast duck, accompanied by boiled rice that absorbed the rich soy sauce beautifully. To end the meal on a sweet note, we shared a yuzu cheesecake that was creamy and light, allowing us to savor each layer.
Despite its proximity to Chinatown, Chop Chop Hippodrome is a hidden gem that may go unnoticed by those visiting the area for other activities. However, I highly recommend giving this restaurant a try, as the quality of the food and the unique dining experience are sure to impress. Whether you’re a fan of Cantonese cuisine or looking to explore new flavours, Chop Chop Hippodrome is worth multiple visits to sample everything on offer.
