A New Zealand man is embarking on a global mission to hand deliver letters from the Galapagos Islands to destinations all over the world. Jonny Beardmore’s journey is not only about delivering messages, but also about raising money in memory of his father, Eric, who sadly passed away from motor neurone disease. With a heartfelt mission driving him forward, Jonny is determined to visit all seven continents by next March, spreading love and awareness along the way.
The tradition of delivering letters from the Galapagos Islands dates back to 1793 when sailors would leave letters in a post box on the islands, hoping passing ships would carry them to their intended recipients. Today, visitors from all over the globe continue this tradition by dropping off letters at a post box in Isla Floreana. Jonny picks up these letters and takes on the responsibility of hand-delivering them to their destinations, creating a unique and personal connection between sender and recipient.
Jonny’s journey has taken him from South America to Antarctica, with stops in Ireland, Iceland, Mexico, Canada, America, Belize, Guatemala, Brazil, Argentina, Panama, Peru, and Paraguay. He has encountered challenges along the way, such as missing recipients who weren’t home when he arrived, but has also experienced serendipitous moments like bumping into letter recipients’ neighbors in town centers. These unexpected encounters highlight the beauty of human connection and the power of delivering messages with love and intention.
Throughout his travels, Jonny has faced logistical and financial challenges, but he remains committed to his mission. He has raised over $10,000NZ towards his $100,000 goal, funding his trip through his own resources and utilizing frequent flyer miles to ease the financial burden. Jonny’s dedication to delivering letters has touched the lives of many, including a couple who had broken up but reconnected through a postcard delivery. Despite not achieving the desired outcome, Jonny’s efforts have sparked conversations and rekindled connections, demonstrating the profound impact of simple acts of kindness.
Jonny’s journey is not just about delivering letters; it’s about spreading awareness and empathy for those who face mobility challenges like his father did. By highlighting the importance of mobility and freedom of movement, Jonny honors his father’s memory and raises awareness for motor neurone disease. His mission serves as a reminder to appreciate the abilities we often take for granted and to cherish the connections we have with others.
As Jonny continues his global mission, he remains dedicated to delivering postcards and letters with care and compassion. From the Galapagos Islands to Nashville, from Antarctica to Ireland, Jonny’s journey is a testament to the power of human connection and the impact of spreading love through handwritten messages. By sharing his story and his adventures, Jonny inspires others to connect, communicate, and cherish the connections that make us all part of a global community united by love and compassion.
