Deadly Mpox Strain Likely Already in UK: Expert Warns
A new, more deadly strain of mpox, previously known as monkeypox, is causing concern as it spreads rapidly across the globe. Professor Paul Hunter, a specialist in infectious diseases, has issued a warning that this highly contagious virus is likely already present in the UK. The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared a public health emergency in response to the outbreak of this new variant in several African nations and the first confirmed case in Europe, in Sweden.
Spread of Mpox
Mpox, a sexually transmitted infection that can spread quickly between countries, poses a significant threat due to its ability to transmit through close contact, such as skin-to-skin and breathing close to an infected person. The virus belongs to the same family as smallpox and presents symptoms such as fever, chills, body aches, and characteristic lesions on the face, hands, chest, and genitals. With a mortality rate estimated at 4-10% in Africa, the latest variant, known as clade 1b, has caused over 17,000 confirmed cases across the continent, resulting in 524 deaths in more than a dozen African countries this year.
Risk in the UK
In the UK, Professor Paul Hunter revealed that while there have been about 180 infections of the earlier strain, clade 2, in 2022, there have been no confirmed cases of the new variant, clade 1b. However, he emphasized the likelihood of the new strain already being present in the country, urging individuals at risk to get vaccinated or reduce their number of sexual partners. The incubation period for mpox is approximately two weeks, during which symptoms may develop, and medical care should be sought.
Professor Hunter’s research has shown that behavioral change and vaccination are crucial in containing the spread of mpox. With over 3,700 individuals infected with the earlier strain in the UK during a large outbreak in 2022, the importance of vaccination and awareness among those at risk cannot be overstated. The UK Health Security Agency has been proactive in reminding healthcare professionals to remain vigilant and informed about the potential spread of the virus.
Preventative Measures and Treatment
Antiviral medications have proven ineffective against mpox, making vaccination and behavioral modifications essential in preventing the spread of the virus. For individuals at risk, such as those with multiple sexual partners, getting vaccinated is a crucial step in protecting oneself and others from infection. The UK’s rollout of mpox vaccines to at-risk individuals has been instrumental in controlling the spread of the virus and reducing the number of cases.
In cases where individuals do contract mpox, treatment consists of monitoring the disease as it progresses. While symptoms may vary in severity, it is essential to seek medical attention if any concerning symptoms develop. With the potential for the new variant, clade 1b, to cause more severe illness and a higher mortality rate, early detection and intervention are key in managing the disease effectively.
As the global community continues to grapple with the challenges posed by the spread of mpox, it is crucial for individuals to stay informed, follow preventative measures, and seek medical advice if needed. The collaboration between healthcare professionals, researchers, and public health agencies is vital in controlling the spread of the virus and protecting the population from the threat of mpox. By working together and staying vigilant, we can effectively combat this deadly strain and prevent further outbreaks in the future.
