A cottage on the Jurassic Coast is now in danger of falling off a 400ft cliff edge after a recent cliff collapse. The thatched cottage, located near Sidmouth in Devon, is now just 40ft away from the edge of the unstable cliffs. This precarious situation occurred after a significant portion of the cliff at Jacob’s Ladder Beach collapsed, causing debris to fall and closing off the South West coastal path for safety reasons.
Drone footage of the 185 million-year-old sandstone cliffs reveals the extent of the landslip and the potential danger it poses to both homeowners and the public. The East Devon District Council has issued a warning to visitors to keep a safe distance from the cliffs along the East Devon coastline due to the natural and unpredictable nature of cliff falls in the area.
Coastal scientist Vicky Walkley pointed out that predicting cliff falls is challenging and can be influenced by factors such as heavy rainfall and warm weather. Previous incidents of cliff collapses in the same location, including one in August 2022 and another in March 2020, serve as reminders of the potential risks associated with the soft rock formations along the coast.
Visitors are urged to exercise caution and maintain a safe distance from the cliffs when walking on the beach. The Coastguard recommends keeping a distance equivalent to the height of the cliff between individuals and the cliff base to ensure safety. The East Devon District Council emphasizes the importance of staying away from the cliffs to prevent any accidents or injuries.
The recent cliff collapse serves as a stark reminder of the ever-changing and unpredictable nature of coastal landscapes. It highlights the need for vigilance and caution when exploring areas near cliff edges, especially in regions prone to landslides and rockfalls. By staying informed and following safety guidelines, visitors can help minimize the risks associated with unstable cliffs and protect both themselves and the environment.
