Hillingdon’s older residents were celebrated by the borough for their contributions to the community during an activity day. The annual Day of the Older Person, which took place on Tuesday, was a big success with 480 visitors in attendance.
The event was opened by Deputy Mayor, Cllr Philip Corthorne, and featured over 30 stalls at the Pavilions Shopping Centre in Uxbridge. These stalls offered advice, support, and information from various groups such as Age UK, Alzheimer’s Society, Carers Trust Hillingdon, and more. Visitors had the opportunity to participate in fun taster activities like boccia, tea dancing, and soft stretching led by instructors from GLL.
Nik Stoter also provided a performance of classic songs, adding to the lively atmosphere of the event. Attendees like Rowena Newman, who cares for her elderly mother, found the day to be very helpful and expressed gratitude for the support available. Others, like Christine Tomkins and Ken Hogg, appreciated the opportunity to learn more about available resources and enjoy the activities and company.
John Bent, a 75-year-old resident of Uxbridge, highlighted the importance of staying active and engaged, mentioning that attending the event was on his list of priorities. Cllr Jane Palmer, Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care, emphasised the valuable contribution that older residents make to Hillingdon and expressed gratitude for their involvement.
