British tourists are seeking winter sun as a response to the coolest summer in a decade. A recent study by the Post Office has shown that 62 percent of Brits feel like they missed out on a British summer this year, while 70 percent are longing for warmer days during the winter months.

Despite the lack of sun over the summer, half of Brits (49 percent) do not take vitamin D, with many feeling like they do not get enough. Additionally, over a third (35 percent) suffer from seasonal affective disorder.

Many Brits express their dislike for the cold winter months, with reasons including dark mornings, high heating bills, slippery ice, and the difficulty of getting out of a warm bed in a cold house. Other annoyances include clothes taking ages to dry, defrosting the car in a hurry, runny noses, wet feet, chapped lips, and travel disruptions.

The study found that 75 percent of Brits have considered seeking winter sun between November and February, with younger generations more likely to book sunny holidays during Christmas. In fact, winter sun destinations have become so popular that they are now preferred over summer holidays by 33 percent of people.

For those looking for holiday inspiration, the study identified the top winter sun destinations in Europe and beyond. European favourites include the Canary Islands, Crete, Cyprus, Rhodes, Sicily, Malta, Madeira, Lanzarote, The Algarve, and Tuscany. Meanwhile, beyond Europe, popular destinations include The Maldives, Hawaii, Barbados, Jamaica, Dubai, Seychelles, Thailand, Mauritius, Singapore, and Cancun.

Winter sun holidays offer a range of benefits, including escaping the cold weather, increasing vitamin D levels, longer days, relaxation, mental health boosts, affordable prices, and avoiding crowds. However, it is concerning that 72 percent of Brits do not have travel insurance before going on holiday, and only a fifth have travel insurance. Of those with insurance, only 14 percent fully understand what it covers.

Paul Paddock, Head of Travel and Protection at the Post Office, emphasises the importance of travel insurance to avoid unnecessary expenses and stress while travelling. He advises travellers to carefully read their policies to understand coverage and protect themselves and their families.

If you are in need of last-minute holiday inspiration for December, January, or February, you can explore winter sun destinations on the Post Office website. As Brits seek to escape the chilly winter weather, travel insurance is essential for a stress-free holiday experience.
