Residents of Ealing are being encouraged to donate their old electronic devices to support the community. Recent research has shown that there are 55 million unused electronic items stored away in drawers across the country.
It has been found that nearly one in five residents in the Ealing borough do not have a computer at home, and a staggering 270,000 individuals in London have no access to the internet at all. This highlights the importance of initiatives like the one being run by the Digital Poverty Alliance in collaboration with Ealing Council, PayByPhone, and ICT Reverse.
Elizabeth Anderson, CEO of the Digital Poverty Alliance, emphasized the significance of this scheme, stating that it provides a wonderful opportunity for people to make a positive impact in their community. The scheme is accepting donations of all types of electronic devices, including mobile phones, tablets, laptops, and their charging cables. These items will be refurbished and given to families in need within the borough.
To ensure privacy and security, the recyclers involved in the scheme will securely wipe all data, programs, photos, and files from each device. Any devices that cannot be reused will be used for parts to repair other electronic items.
Donation hubs have been set up at various locations including Acton, Northolt, Ealing Central, and Southall libraries, as well as the Hanwell Community Centre. Residents who are interested in participating in this initiative can find more information on the Digital Poverty Alliance website.
