I recently experienced a culinary adventure like no other right here in London, at a tiny restaurant called The Gurkhas Residency at RAI. This hidden gem, tucked away in Bayley Street, offers a unique dining experience with just four seats available.

The concept behind The Gurkhas Residency was born out of a desire to bring authentic Nepalese cuisine to the bustling city of London. Founded by Shrabaneswor Rai, the restaurant pays homage to his Gurkha family heritage through a carefully crafted multi-course tasting menu.

Upon entering the intimate space, my dining companion and I were greeted by the tantalizing smells coming from the open-plan kitchen. We took our seats next to the kitchen, allowing us to watch Chef Deatam Rai prepare each dish with precision and care.

The tasting menu, priced at £49, offers a culinary journey through the vibrant flavors of Nepal. Each course was expertly paired with recommended wines, enhancing the overall dining experience.

We started our gastronomic adventure with a handpicked oyster, followed by a chatpate, a popular Nepalese street food delicacy. The dish was a delightful mix of puffed rice, potatoes, radish, chickpeas, and spices, served in a wooden bowl with a wooden spoon, paying homage to its humble origins.

As the meal progressed, we were treated to a variety of dishes, including succulent lamb, skewered potatoes cooked over a fire, and Nepal’s national food, daal bhat. The innovative presentation and bold flavors of each dish left us in awe of the culinary expertise behind The Gurkhas Residency.

To cleanse our palate, we enjoyed a bhogate sadheko and yoghurt sorbet from Kathmandu, which provided a refreshing break between courses. The dessert selection was equally impressive, featuring khuwa cheesecake, spiced tea ice cream, and traditional Nepalese candies.

As we savored the last sips of milky sake, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the incredible journey I had just experienced at The Gurkhas Residency. From the warm hospitality to the exquisite flavours, this tiny restaurant had transported me to the heart of Nepal without ever leaving London.

Overall, The Gurkhas Residency at RAI is a must-visit for food enthusiasts looking to embark on a culinary adventure like no other. With its innovative menu, intimate setting, and impeccable service, this hidden gem is sure to leave a lasting impression on all who dine there.
