Dan Martensen, a fashion photographer turned accidental restaurateur, found unexpected success with his Primrose Hill bagel shop, inspired by his New York roots. His desire for a taste of home during lockdown led him to create the perfect bagel with the help of Caravan’s head baker Jack Ponting. The shop quickly gained popularity, attracting long queues of customers eager to try their unique bagel creations.

Due to the overwhelming response, Martensen decided to expand his business and will be opening a new 500sq ft bagel shop in Notting Hill on August 5. The new location will offer the same delicious bagels and sandwiches that have made his Primrose Hill shop a hit, along with some new additions in collaboration with Secret Sandwich Shop.

Martensen’s passion for authentic New York bagels shines through in every detail of his shops, from the retro design inspired by classic American diners to the artwork on the walls contributed by his photographer friends. The cozy cafe space will provide seating for 14 indoors and 16 on an outdoor terrace, giving customers a welcoming place to enjoy their freshly baked bagels.

“It’s Bagels” has become a favorite spot for celebrities like Alexa Chung, Laura Jackson, and Daisy Lowe, who appreciate the quality and flavor of Martensen’s creations. The menu features a variety of options, from classic combinations like The Works and BEC to more unique offerings like The Grinder, a cold cuts bagel filled with a delicious mix of meats and cheeses.

Martensen’s journey from photographer to restaurateur showcases the power of passion and creativity in the culinary world. His commitment to creating the perfect bagel has resonated with customers and earned him a loyal following in London. The opening of his new Notting Hill location marks the next chapter in his bagel empire, providing even more people with the opportunity to experience the magic of “It’s Bagels.”
