A finance director from West Ealing has recently returned to the UK after successfully completing the Clipper 2023-24 Round the World Yacht Race. Sue Melly’s incredible journey spanned 40,000 nautical miles and has earned her the prestigious title of a circumnavigator, a feat achieved by only a select few individuals who have sailed around the world.

To put this remarkable achievement into perspective, it is worth noting that more people have climbed Mount Everest than have completed a full circumnavigation of the globe by sea. Sue Melly’s accomplishment is a testament to her endurance, resilience, and courage throughout the 11-month-long race.

Participating in one of the 11 identical teams, Sue Melly and her fellow crew members faced the ultimate test of pushing themselves to their limits both physically and mentally. The Clipper Race is a grueling challenge that demands unwavering determination and a willingness to embrace the unknown.

Sue sailed on board UNICEF, a team that emerged victorious in the 14th and final stage of the race from Oban to Portsmouth, securing a commendable fourth place overall. The Clipper Race was founded by Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, a legendary sailor who was the first person to sail solo, non-stop around the world. This global sailing event is open to individuals over the age of 18, regardless of their previous sailing experience.

It is worth highlighting the fact that many of the race crew, including Sue Melly, had no prior sailing experience before embarking on this extraordinary journey. They underwent four weeks of intensive training before setting sail from Portsmouth on September 3, fully prepared to face the challenges that awaited them on the open seas.

Sue Melly’s successful completion of the Clipper Race serves as an inspiration to all who dare to dream of embarking on their own adventures, pushing beyond their comfort zones, and discovering the incredible strength that lies within them. Her story is a testament to the power of perseverance, teamwork, and the indomitable human spirit. As she returns home to West Ealing, Sue Melly can proudly look back on her epic round-the-world journey with a sense of accomplishment that few will ever experience.
