As snow covers many parts of the UK and temperatures drop, the first cold weather payments for 2024 have been activated. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) offers this one-time payment of £25 to qualifying households when the temperature in their area remains at or below zero degrees for seven consecutive days.
Approximately 10,000 individuals across 18 postcode areas are expected to receive this payment, with the majority being in Cumbria and Northumberland. To be eligible for the cold weather payment, you must be receiving Pension Credit, Income Support, Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA), Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), Universal Credit, or Support for Mortgage Interest. Additionally, you must live in an area where temperatures have been consistently low.
If you meet the criteria, the payment will be automatically deposited into your bank account within 14 working days. However, if you believe you qualify but have not received the payment, you can contact the DWP for assistance.
For those living in Scotland, it’s important to note that the cold weather payment scheme has been replaced with Winter Heating Payments by the Scottish government. To check if your postcode is eligible for the cold weather payment, the government provides a tool for verification. If you disagree with the DWP’s decision regarding your eligibility, you have the option to appeal directly to the department.
Stay warm and safe this winter by ensuring you are aware of the support available to you during cold weather conditions. Remember to check your eligibility for cold weather payments and take advantage of the assistance provided by the government to help you through the winter season.
