Ukraine’s military has reported that Russia launched an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) for the first time during the ongoing war. The missile was allegedly launched from the Astrakhan region of the Russian Federation, an area bordering the Caspian Sea. The attack targeted enterprises and critical infrastructure in the city of Dnipro. While the air force did not provide details on casualties or damage, they claimed to have shot down six Kh-101 cruise missiles. These claims have not been independently verified.
In response to these attacks, Hungary announced plans to install an air defence system in the north-eastern part of the country due to the increased threat of escalation in the Ukraine-Russia war. The country, a member of both Nato and the EU, has faced criticism for perceived support towards Russia. Russian air defences reportedly shot down two British Storm Shadow cruise missiles, while Ukraine fired similar missiles into Russia for the first time.
Additionally, Russia has criticized the US decision to open an air defence base in Poland, calling it provocative and destabilizing. The base became operational on November 13 as part of the Nato Aegis Ashore missile defence system. Maria Zakharova, a spokesperson for the Russian foreign ministry, also highlighted Ukrainian attacks on Russia, claiming that over 530 Ukrainian drones were intercepted and destroyed in Russian regions.
In response to Ukraine’s actions, Russia’s foreign intelligence service director warned that any attempts by Nato countries to strike inside Russia would be met with consequences. Meanwhile, Belarus’s chief of staff criticized the US decision to provide Ukraine with longer-range missiles and anti-personnel mines. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to the US for providing essential support to stop Russian assaults, including landmines, drones, and ammunition.
As the conflict continues, countries like Ireland, Italy, Spain, and Greece have closed their embassies in Ukraine following the US embassy’s closure. Latin American countries, including Brazil, Chile, Colombia, and Mexico, have called for actions to avoid escalating the arms race in the region. South Korea has reported the deployment of North Korean troops in the Kursk region to participate in the Ukraine war, further complicating the situation.
The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues to escalate, with new developments and responses from various countries shaping the dynamics of the war. The impact of these actions on the region and the potential for further escalation remain key concerns for global stability.
